Gloves for fashion (vs. Warmth) were popular up until the late 60s. Women wouldn't even venture to the grocery store without their white gloves. No outfit was complete without coordinating gloves, whether they were cotton or leather dress gloves. Ball gowns, suits, summer dresses and casual wear still demanded gloves.

However, leather gloves make their own fashion statement. Typically worn with fall couture clothing lines as shown in magazines like Town and Country, this accessory is making a huge comeback in the fashion industry. Boutiques and big box retailers in larger urban areas such as New York and Boston were showing leather items in every color and size for men and women this past season.

No longer relegated to only fundamental styles to match cold weather coats and jackets, the new styles go with suits, dresses and even much more casual outfits that include jeans and boots. Gucci has an entire line of leather boots with matching gloves and Chanel has a line of Clutch purses with matching ones, too (that of course fit nicely inside the matching clutch).

The newer three quarter length sleeve suit jackets, sweaters and coats demand a more refined look, so many designers have brought back an old time favorite - elbow length gloves. Pair these with the appropriate length sleeve, and it just exudes class and sophistication.

Leather comes in a wide range of quality and of course the soft supple leather we all love and admire tends to be the costliest. Anything made with lambskin is about five times more than the same pair made with ordinary cowhide.

Can you tell the difference? Absolutely. A fine pair of quality gloves will have almost invisible seams, no defects, and will feel more like silk than leather. They are usually lined with very soft combed cotton, felt or Egyptian cotton.

Of course, the finer the material the easier it is to get damaged. Leather is notorious for being a bit fragile when not properly cared for. Be careful of tiny nicks and scrapes - there isn't much you can do to repair the damage. Although some can withstand the effects of harsh weather, fine leathers don't do well with repeated exposure to rain or snow. If you do need dress gloves to keep warm, this is the perfect reason to buy a less expensive pair - this quality of leather is ideal for putting up with cold, rain, slush, snow and even rock salt.

A decent pair of gloves that can used with different outfits and can probably withstand a few rain storms will probably run you around $100. For top quality in a couture line, don't be shocked at paying over $1,000.

Women frequently have their gloves custom made to fit their fingers perfectly. The reason is that they will put their rings and other jewelry over the gloved fingers rather than forcing the gloves to stretch around the rings, causing some significant unsightly damage. Think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. She had long black satin Chanel custom made gloves, with a huge diamond over her finger.
